Hazel Macrotomy 398mm

Macrotomy a process in science of taking slices through an object find out more about it.

This is a piece of Hazel from a 'coppiced hazel stool', which is a multi-stem rooting system that will live definitely long if it cut back to the ground every 15-20 years. This habit evolved in hazel and many other native hardwoods when the land was roamed by large herbivores.

Every piece of wood is different. This relatively short piece was quite clean with a branch only growing near to the end where we trimmed it off.  We ask the tree 'what can we do?' and this told us not to bend it at the end but elsewhere was ok.
