This is a piece of Hazel from a 'coppiced hazel stool', which is a multi-stem rooting system that will live definitely long if it cut back to the ground every 15-20 years. This habit evolved in hazel and many other native hardwoods when the land was roamed by large herbivores.
Every piece of wood is different. This was actually the first of these works I made, I'd never do this with a round stick or Hazel before. We chose a super clean piece of hazel with no branches or bends and I was blown away by how much of a lovely process it was to create. The wood bent very easily... it felt like a work that 'wanted' to be made and the design just happened...
