Hazel Macrotomy 523mm

Macrotomy a process in science of taking slices through an object find out more about it.

This is a piece of Hazel from a 'coppiced hazel stool', which is a multi-stem rooting system that will live definitely long if it cut back to the ground every 15-20 years.  This habit evolved in hazel and many other native hardwoods when the land was roamed by large herbivores.

Every piece of wood is different - this one had several small knots from little branches - the complex form came from the need to reinforce the those parts but passing other over them... and the sculpture emerged.
